Growing Luck
I built a 49” x 26” plywood frame — a small rectangle of soil, seeds, and possibility.
Inside, I grew Dutch White clover, patiently watching as it sprouted and spread.
Science said I’d need about 1.2 square meters of clover to find one with four leaves — roughly the space I had created.
It was deeply satisfying to follow a process I could begin but never control — leaving everything to chance.
When the clovers started to grow, I moved them from my studio to the reception area of the International Center of Photography.
The reception sits inside a glass cube — the only part of the school above ground.
It felt symbolic: photography is all about light and time, and now the clovers lived within that same space.
ICP is surrounded by banks and skyscrapers — grey upon grey upon grey.
I wanted something to break through the monotony, to stand out, to make people pause for a moment in their daily rhythm —and maybe, just maybe, to feel a hint of wonder.
